The first installation was a suitcase to take with you to the beach in Vlissingen at night, out of that suitcase a statement would be made about this city. In this project you can see the boundaries of privateness that everybody carries around, and in some cities, like Vlissingen, they are more visible than in other parts of the world. Either Vlissingen and Venice are or feel overruled by others, the only difference is that Venice is till now, never free. Vlissingen is overruled in yearly waves, every time coming and going, high and low tide. Venice however seems trapped in an endless big public space, always crowded, every time of the year with people who want to admire all the beauty in the form of romantic streetscapes, museums, delicious food and old architecture style it offers. Vlissingen is only admired for the natural landscape which is best to visit in the spring and summer. Therefore Vlissingen is much more purer, lighter, more untouched than Venice, it can restore itself often without any influence from outside. Vlissingen doesn’t even try to be a good place, where Venice is a non-stop theatre.

The second installation is an experiment to give Venice back to the Venetians by claiming just small parts of Venice as their own. Parts where no tourists come, to reclaim their land and ownership over their lives (nowadays the Venetian people are disappearing because every bit of a normal life is moving to the main land like hospitals, schools, etc )

In Vlissingen you are alone, in Venice you are always together. Venice is a city without boundaries. Where Vlissingen is wide, Venice is narrow. Where Venice is elegant and dressed up, Vlissingen is raw and naked. Where Venice is a model, Vlissingen is a factory worker. Where Venice seems to be frozen in time, Vlissingen is always decaying and rebuilding. Where Venice is an important dot to see on a map, Vlissingen is a hidden treasure.

Vlissingen: Boundaries vs Venice: Claiming space
